The mission of Grand Haven Main Street Downtown Development Authority is to enhance a vibrant historic business district through community efforts, plus public and private partnerships.

Grand Haven is one of only eighteen communities in the state of Michigan to be recognized as part of the Michigan Main Street Program. The intention of this program includes revitalizing the downtown, promoting businesses, increasing economic development, and encouraging growth in the community’s business districts.

The Main Street Program uses a Four Point Approach that includes four different committees of volunteers whom undertake aspects related to the Main Street goals. These committees are: Organization, Promotions, Recruitment and Retention, Preservation and Place. All of the committees and the staff at Grand Haven Main Street function under the provision of a governing board of city officials, business owners and appointed members of the local community.

From 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday, November 16th, Grand Haven Main Street provides a picturesque postcard start to this year’s holiday season. Downtown Grand Haven will be abuzz with festivities and cheer as Light Night kicks off the holiday shopping season.  Lakeshore Middle School Choir will stroll throughout downtown, providing fun, festive holiday music and the return of the “Steel Doin It” steel drum band will be performing on Washington by Fifth Third Bank.  Retail stores throughout the Main Street downtown will host open houses with special holiday treats and festive activities for all ages.  The Boy Scouts Troop 246 will be selling fresh evergreen wreaths and the Tri-Cities Historical Museum will hand out roasted chestnuts, popcorn and cider.

“Light Night is a special night for our merchants and residents to come together to welcome the holiday season,” said Sharon Behm, co-owner of Borr’s Shoes and Chair of the Grand Haven Main Street Board.  “Besides hot cocoa and Christmas cookies, you can wander through our charming downtown while listening to holiday music and sampling roasted chestnuts.  It’s Grand Haven hospitality at its best.”

Limited edition holiday shopping totes and free hot cocoa, compliments of Coffee Grounds will be given to the first 500 shoppers and available at North Second Street and Washington (next to Hostetter’s at 135 Washington).

Light Night is hosted by Grand Haven Main Street, with support from the Tri-Cities Historical Museum and the Chamber of Commerce.  For more information contact Main Street at 616-844-1188.
