One of the most wonderful things about Grand Haven is its waterfront location. The city is bordered to the west by Lake Michigan. The Grand Haven Lighthouse is a sight to see, only a short walk along the pier from City Beach.

Lake Michigan is renowned for its fishing, boating, swimming, windsurfing and other recreational activities. The annual Great Lakes Kite Festival is held at City Beach in May. In the summer, a sand sculpture building contest draws crowds to the lakeshore.

The Grand River provides a beautiful barrier to the north. Along its banks are Harbor Island and Chinook pier–complete with a marina, charter fishing fleet, one of a kind stores, snack shops, eateries, miniature golf course and more. The boardwalk begins at Chinook Pier and winds out toward the lighthouse, passing by Waterfront Stadium–which features nightly Musical Fountain shows in the summer–and the Coast Guard station.
